5 new technologies in maintenance management of the oil and gas sector

New technologies influence all industries and even the way of life, but the pace of growth of technologies and replacing new technologies has always affected their impact. One of the developing technologies is artificial intelligence that will have a considerable influence in all industries in the future.

Naturally, some technologies are also disruptive (Disruptive), and their application affects the performance of an industry, resulting in a disruption in established firms.

One of the pressures that most industries face is the time and cost of device failure, while employ new technologies can revolutionize maintenance management.

This article examines five new technologies be capable of changing the management of the oil and gas sector.

1- Subsea artificial arm; Eelume

Before the advent of Eelume arm technology, controls and repairs of subsea infrastructure have worked through remote control vehicles (ROV).

For this purpose, a ship carrying remote control vehicles (ROV) has been sent to the position and the work is controlled by the operator on board.

Eelume consists of a snake-like robot that can use to inspect, maintain and repair subsea oil and gas infrastructure.

What makes this robot isolated from other technologies is that Eelume can guide itself and no longer has to use remote control equipment.

This robot is considered a disruptive technology as it significantly reduces the cost of inspection and maintenance of marine equipment.

The determinants of inspection and maintenance costs of undersea equipment are affected by the depth and antiquity of the infrastructure. The Eelume robot can be deployed to the offshore facility to carry out maintenance activities that increase efficiency and reduce the time taken to repair installations.

Tasks performed by the Eelume robot include inspecting, cleaning, and adjusting valves. The snake-shaped of this robot allows access to the spaces between the pipes and the infrastructure.

Because of the permanent presence of this robot in the facilities, it can use to control and maintain the facilities before significant failure.

2- Development of industrial Internet

Another improvement in the field of maintenance is the development of industrial Internet use in the manufacturing sector. The industrial Internet objects by joining machines and using data will reduce operating costs, increase performance and reliability.

GE and BP have used the technology to connect 650 deep oil wells to the industrial Internet, using General Electric’s Predix software platform to monitor and predict oil wells’ performance and failure rates.

The advantage of this technology is that it used simulation and preventive measures to monitor and control subsea facilities, using data from 650 oil wells and analytical tools.

3- Training in virtual reality

One of the key elements to maintain maintenance costs is to train personnel, increase their skills and effectiveness in decision-making. Using virtual reality technology, workers can face the conditions they face in the physical environment and prepare for specific tasks. Training will enhance the performance and reduce the time required for repair.

4- Eddyfi inspection tool for corrosion under insulation

New technology for non-destructive testing (NDT) developed by Eddyfi is likely to be effective in maintenance.

In oil and gas facilities, the integrity of pipelines is crucial to discuss production and even safety. Any pipe rupture can have irreparable consequences.

The purpose of the NDT method is to specify the corrosion site or erosion that affects the integrity of the equipment. Once a breakdown problem is identified, it will be defined to repair or replace equipment before failures, planning, and a maintenance project.

When the oil transmission lines have covered by insulation, the detection of the tube and the thinning of it will be difficult. Corrosion measurements in NDT technology determine the amount of time required to plan maintenance.

During studies and specialized experiments carried out of corrosion under insulation, Eddify discovered that the Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) technology is most effective in CUI-specific conditions.

5- Installation of Fluke cabling and progress of repairs

Optical fiber cables are the standard infrastructure at the production facility. These cables are used to transport a large amount of data to control the process, optimize and study facility maintenance.

Because of the dangerous nature of many manufacturing facilities, Optifiber’s Fluke Company with a Smartloop product has solved the difficulty of accessing these unsafe resources.

With this new technology, technicians won’t need to be present and access dangerous areas.

The endless way of technology

Modern technologies are a limitless process that will develop and improve performance in various industries every time. This paper reviews five technologies that will help improve maintenance management and repair in the oil and gas industry.

The use of these technologies is helpful and helpful to prevent the costs of oil and gas infrastructures.
